A total of about 117 pounds of cocaine and methamphetamine were seized in five separate weekend smuggling attempts at Nogales border crossings.
The drugs were worth more than $563,000.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, there were three separate incidents on Sunday:
- Officers found 10 packages of cocaine weighing about 28 pounds in the rear trunk area of a Nissan sedan at the Mariposa crossing. A 40-year-old Mexican woman was taken into custody.
- A drug-sniffing dog detected about 15 pounds of methamphetamine in the fuel tank of a Ford truck belonging to a 30-year-old man from Nogales, Arizona. He attempted to cross at the Dennis DeConcini crossing and was arrested.
- More than 43 pounds of methamphetamine was found within the rear bumper of a Ford sedan at the DeConcini crossing. The car was driven by a 25-year-old Mexican man. A 24-year-old Mexican woman was a passenger in the car. Both were taken into custody.
- On Jan. 23, officers found more than 12 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the rear quarter panels and trunk of a Chrysler sedan at the DeConcini crossing. A Mexican man and woman, both age 21, were arrested.
- On Jan. 22, authorities found 18 pounds of methamphetamine in the back seat of a Volkswagen sedan at the DeConcini crossing. The car was driven by a 21-year-old Nogales, Arizona man who was arrested.
