BISBEE — A company that cans and processes vegetables at a plant in McNeal has been sued by the state for violating air- and water-pollution standards.
Fiesta Canning Co. has a history of not complying with state environmental regulations, said Andrea M. Esquer, press secretary for Attorney General Terry Goddard, whose office filed the suit.
Its violations range from operating equipment without an air-quality permit to discharging wastewater containing pollutants without a permit.
Fiesta Canning referred all calls to its president, who did not return calls for comment.
Esquer said Fiesta has racked up numerous violations and could be fined between $500 and $25,000 a day.
She said the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality attempted to make Fiesta comply, and when it was unable to do so contacted the Attorney General's Office. Fiesta Canning has paid some fines for violating the permits, Esquer said.
