Tucson police arrested a man on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with a crash Jan. 18 that killed a 28-year-old woman.
Paul Eduardo Meza-Cortez, 23, was booked Thursday into the Pima County jail and is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond, police said. He also is accused of aggravated assault, leaving the scene of a fatal collision, and felony criminal damage in connection with the crash, the Tucson Police Department said in a news release Friday, Jan. 30.
The crash occurred about 7 p.m. Jan. 18 in the 4000 block of East Fort Lowell Road. Police said Meza-Cortez was driving a 2017 Jeep Wrangler that was speeding when it crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2017 red Mitsubishi Mirage head-on, killing its driver, Angela Marie King.
The driver of the Jeep and his 17-year-old passenger ran from the scene but officers, with the help of police K9 and air units, detained them nearby, the news release said. Both were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and police said at the time that charges were pending against the driver.
