The cycle of human life - birth, death and everything in between, including folly, greed, futility and other shortcomings - are symbolized pessimistically through the insect world in the 1922 satire "The Insect Play."
Written by Czechoslovakian brothers Karel and Josef Capek, the play was performed last Thursday through Saturday by students in the advanced-theater classes at Catalina Foothills High School, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive.
A tramp finds human parallels throughout the play as he is subjected to the whims of butterflies, beetles, crickets and ants.
Junior Brian Erickson, 17, who plays the lead role of the tramp, said, "To me, the play represents the teetering line between the desire to live and the desire to remove oneself from life."
The tramp examines the life of the insect world and the human world, Erickson said. It transforms the tramp from his character in the beginning of the play, who is a person withdrawn from life, into a lively, reborn, energized being, he said.
