Sign language isn't only for deaf people.
Libby Quinn uses sign language for storytelling at various engagements around town. She was recently at the Dusenberry-River Library, where she presented stories about animals while addressing the benefits of learning and using sign language for all children.
The program was intended for babies and toddlers and their parents and caregivers. This is Quinn's first year working with Pima County and she travels to seven libraries around town to do the storytelling.
Normally she works with children from toddler-age to 5 years old.
She does signing storytelling on a variety of subjects including animals, colors, emotions, planting seasons, holidays and infant songs.
Quinn said sign language helps the children in adaptive skills, social and emotional skills and self-confidence, and it increases cognition at an earlier age.
