The Vista Del Rio Residents' Association and Old Pueblo Archaeology Center organized a "Day in the Park" at Vista Del Rio Cultural Resource Park Saturday to educate families and children about the ancient people who once lived there.
"We have some children's activities going on. Lots of arts and crafts, a lot of mimicking what people had to do to survive," said Allen Dart, a volunteer and professional archeologist who helped coordinate the event at the park, 7575 E. Desert Arbors St.
The land was once considered as a site for a new elementary school as well as many other things, Dart said. However, before any construction was to start, archeological tests found evidence of Hohokam tribes having inhabited the land.
Children's activities included touring the park looking for artifacts, grinding corn, molding clay, making crafts with beads and colored rocks and learning about American Indian tools.
