St. Mark's United Methodist Church will host "COPD 101" from 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the church, 1431 W. Magee Road.
The workshop is free and open to the public.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a term referring to two lung diseases - chronic bronchitis and emphysema - that are characterized by obstruction to airflow that interferes with normal breathing.
The conditions frequently co-exist; hence, the term COPD. However, it does not include other obstructive diseases such as asthma.
The workshop will be presented by Jim Nelson, a volunteer with the COPD Coalition (a grant-funded program of the American Lung Association). Workshop components will include:
• Developing COPD awareness
• Understanding prevention, causes, risks and symptoms

• Experiencing the disease through a 3-D interactive program
Nelson, originally from Colorado, was diagnosed with COPD in 1997. In 2006 he and his wife sold their accounting practice and retired to Tucson. He joined the COPD Coalition as a volunteer and has been working to educate the public about this disease.
Nelson was recently selected to be the spokesman for the COPD Collaborative program for 2011-12. He will be featured in television, radio and print ads through the state.
The workshop will be held in the Fellowship Hall at St. Mark's.
