As a mom, every choice I make comes back to one thing: my child’s future. I think about whether they’ll have teachers who believe in them, schools that support their growth, and opportunities that prepare them for what comes next. That’s why Proposition 414, the TUSD override, matters to me, not as a political issue, but as a parent.
So what exactly is Prop 414? At its core, it’s a way for our community to give TUSD the resources it needs through something called a budget override. That means voters give the district permission to add funding to its regular budget for seven years. Think of it as saying: Yes, we believe in our kids enough to invest in them directly.
Here’s what that looks like in real numbers:
- The average homeowner would pay about $17 a month, less than a couple of coffees.
- That small contribution unlocks more than $45 million in the first year alone.
- It helps raise teacher pay so our educators stay in Tucson instead of leaving for better-paying districts.
- It funds reading and math support, fine arts programs, counselors, social workers, PE teachers, pre-K, and career and technical education.

For me, these numbers translate into something far more personal. They mean my child could have a counselor to talk to when life feels heavy. They mean teachers who aren’t stretched so thin that burnout drives them away. They mean my child—and every child—can explore arts, music, and career paths that spark their curiosity and prepare them for the future.
I know times are tough. We all feel the squeeze when the cost of groceries, gas, and bills pile up. But when I put it into perspective, $17 a month for a chance to invest in the kind of education every child deserves, I see it as a gift to my child and to our whole community.
For too long, Arizona schools have been asked to do more with less. State and federal cuts have chipped away at what should be basic for every student. Prop 414 is our chance to say no more. Our kids are worth it. Their teachers are worth it. Tucson’s future is worth it.
When I vote yes on Prop 414, I’m not just thinking about my own child. I’m thinking about the students who need a little extra help learning to read, the teen who finds their voice in art or music, the teacher who can afford to stay in the classroom because we chose to support them.
This override is about hope, about opportunity, and about community. And I believe our kids deserve nothing less.
