Team of the Week

Desert Christian got in the win column for the first time this season on Friday, beating San Carlos 31-22. The win is also a first for new head coach Zach Davila, who played for Cienega and the University of Utah. Sophomores James McKinney and Aaron Rountree connected six times, with Rountree scoring on five of his six catches for a total of 168 yards.

Play of the Week

Desert View ran for 281 yards and five touchdowns on the ground against Mountain View on Friday, displaying excellent counter run schemes. The Jags ran a perfectly executed counter play with tremendous blocks at the first and second levels, allowing free space for senior running back Desmond Dowayee to scamper 39 yards for his third touchdown of the night.

Stat book

Six quarterbacks had 200-plus yard passing performances on Friday, with several adding on substantial rushing performances as dual-threats.

Rio Rico senior quarterback led all Southern Arizona quarterbacks with 372 passing yards via 17 completions on 23 attempts, throwing four touchdowns in the process in a 48-7 thrashing of Amphi. Sabino junior Bodhi Sanford completed 18 of his 27 passes for 246 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 28 yards on the ground. Cholla senior quarterback Damian Estrella led the Chargers past Kofa with a 12-for-20 day, throwing for 226 and two scores. Sahuarita junior Dane Hartnett had the strongest dual-threat day, throwing for 212 yards on a 15-for-23 day with two passing touchdowns, two interceptions and 65 yards on the ground with one rushing score. Ironwood Ridge junior Maximus Harder completed nine of 12 passes for 217 yards and four scores while adding two more on the ground. Sahuaro junior Kallen Davis rounds out the group with a 205-yard day, completing 13 of 23 attempts for a touchdown and a pick.

Mac’s Friday Fact

Tucson High junior Ezra Spivey continued his case to be Arizona’s best multi-use ironman football player on Friday, serving in five different roles for the No. 17 Badgers. Spivey played his normal roles of receiver and safety, while also serving as Tucson’s punter, holder and returner.

He caught three passes for 16 yards, including the game-tying touchdown in overtime, then served as the holder for the game-winning PAT. On special teams, he threw a 27-yard first-down pass on a fake punt and ran for a first down on another fake punt. Defensively, he recorded eight total tackles, two tackles for loss, and stopped Sierra Vista Buena on a 2-point conversion in overtime to set his team up for the game-tying and winning scores.
