Pima County is interested in buying the vacant Catalina Mountain School for use as a community center and open space.
The catch? The state hasn’t decided whether it wants to sell, and, if so, for how much.
The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections facility for boys, at 14500 N. Oracle Road, closed last year, and the department’s lease expires in June.
The state owns the buildings on 93 acres of land leased from the Arizona State Land Department.
Pima County has approached the state about the possibility of the state selling it, said Diana Durazo, staff assistant to the county administrator.
The location would help the county with its wildlife-corridors project, she said. One of the proposed wildlife-crossing bridges would be near that site.

The 1967 buildings could potentially become a community center and recreation center for the Catalina area, Durazo said.
