Trey Griffey, the son of future Hall of Famer and former Mariners star Ken Griffey Jr., has memories of Seattle you’d expect — and some you wouldn’t.
For example: “When I was really young, I loved being at the Kingdome,” the younger Griffey said. “You’re a little kid and it’s a big field and you can run around do everything. That was great for me.”
OK, makes sense.
And for something that may catch you off guard a little bit: “As a little kid, you love rain. There’s a lot of rain and a lot of snails in Seattle. You’d get salt, put salt on the snails and see how they react. It was just being young and having fun. That’s what it was about when I was in Seattle.”

Griffey, a redshirt freshman wide receiver, was born in Seattle while his dad was starring for the Mariners. He returns tonight with the UA, looking to get his season going.

Griffey was slowed during fall camp with a concussion, and has yet to catch a pass this season. Finally healthy, Griffey said he’d love nothing more than record his first college catch in the town where his dad became a legend. Playing for the Mariners between 1989-99 and 2009-10, Griffey Jr. led the American League in home runs four times. The Mariners inducted Griffey into the club’s ring of honor last month.
“I’m starting to get back to where I was,” Griffey said. “I’m coming along a lot better.”
Ken Griffey Jr. will be at Husky Stadium today to watch his son. Trey will have other family and friends there, too.
“I was a Mariners fan, but I was more of a my dad’s fan,” Trey said. “Seeing my dad every day; all I cared about what he was doing. That was my big thing growing up. I haven’t really played in Seattle. I’ll talk to my dad about it. It wasn’t like I played for Seattle and then came here. It’s just going back to where I was born.”
