The transformation of Tucson’s downtown continues, with some $360 million worth of development under way and even more than that on the drawing board, according to the latest development update from the Downtown Tucson Partnership.
More than 20 projects currently under or nearing construction — including Caterpillar’s new surface-mining division headquarters and the West End Station affordable housing project — will add 670 housing units and 651,000 square feet of commercial space downtown.
Downtown welcomed 35 new businesses last year and officials project that 32 more will open this year. Last year’s new businesses included 12 bars and restaurants and five entertainment sites .
Since January 2017, developers have spent $75 million completing projects, including the AC Hotel Tucson, that are adding up to 120 housing units and 322 new jobs, the downtown group says.
About $390 million worth of new downtown developments are planned or have been proposed, comprising 884 housing units and 760,000 square feet of new or renovated commercial space.
