PHOENIX — Nine Arizonans rank among the world’s wealthiest people, according to the latest tally of global billionaires by Forbes.
The magazine didn’t provide a billionaire tally by state, but California leads the way with 131, which would put it above all countries other than the United States and China if it were a separate nation.
All of Arizona’s super-rich live in the Phoenix metro area. All of Arizona’s leaders derived their wealth primarily from investments in public corporations that fared well in the stock market.
Bruce Halle, the 85-year-old founder and chairman of Discount Tire, has led the state’s contingent of richest people for years. Forbes estimated his worth at $5.4 billion as of its Feb. 12 cutoff date, placing him No. 240 in the world.

Mark Shoen, 64, the largest individual shareholder of Amerco, the parent of Phoenix-based U-Haul International, is worth $4.6 billion, ranking 317.
Bennett Dorrance, 70, a Campbell Soup heir and partner in developer DMB Associates, is worth $3.1 billion, ranking 569.
John Kapoor, 72, a major shareholder in two pharmaceutical companies including Chandler-based Insys Therapeutics, is worth $2 billion, in 906th place.
Bob Parsons, 65, the founder and majority shareholder of Scottsdale-based GoDaddy, tied with Kapoor in 906th place with a net worth of $2 billion.
Four other Arizonans have wealth at or above $1 billion:
Arturo Moreno, 69, a former billboard-company executive who now owns the Los Angeles Angels, is worth $1.8 billion (No. 1011).
Peter Sperling, 56, the son of Apollo Education Group founder John Sperling, is worth $1.2 billion (No. 1476).
Stewart Horejsi, 78, an early investor in Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway who also had a family business, tied with Sperling at $1.2 billion in 1476th place.
Edward “Joe” Shoen, 66, Amerco’s chairman and president — and Mark Shoen’s brother — is worth $1.1 billion (No. 1577).
According to Forbes, all of the Arizona billionaires live in Phoenix or Paradise Valley except for Parsons, who resides in Scottsdale.
