Athletic shoe and apparel giant Nike is using an online platform hosted by Tucson-based startup RallyUp.com for a high-profile fundraiser, the local company said Tuesday.
RallyUp.com’s fundraising system is processing entries in Nike’s newly launched Nike MAG campaign, a charity drawing for a pair of limited-edition sneakers that benefits The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Nike is raffling off a limited number of the Nike MAGs, a prized high-tech sneaker inspired by the movie “Back to the Future, Part II.” The sneakers feature adaptive, or self-lacing, technology with permanent laces tightening automatically when the shoe is donned.
In 2011, Nike raised more than $9 million for The Michael J. Fox Foundation when it auctioned off about 1,500 Nike MAGs, without the self-lacing feature. Those shoes sell to collectors for hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Nike is making fewer than 100 pairs of the new Nike MAGs available globally through the drawing, which began Tuesday and ends Oct. 11. Winners will be notified on Oct. 17.
Each ticket costs $10, and there’s no limit to the number of tickets you can buy. All of the proceeds will go to the Fox foundation to help find a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

Founded in 2012 by University of Arizona alumnus Steven Bernat, RallyUp.com has hosted more than 800 online fundraisers for charities including chapters of Habitat for Humanity, the United Way and the American Heart Association.
