They had a tradition back when Country Thunder launched in 1993 at Schnepf Farms in Queen Creek.
Around 9 or 10 a.m., with Sawyer Brown's version of "The Race is On" blaring from the loudspeaker, they would open the festival ground gates and dozens upon dozens of sleepy, still-hungover campers would sprint the 500, 600 yards to GA seating near the stage.
They'd stake out a spot close to the fence separating the reserved seating from general admission and plop down their blankets or chairs. Call it the Country Thunder equivalent to planting a flag.
A fan gets a boost for a better view during the 20th Annual Country Thunder music festival in 2013 in Florence. This year's festival runs April 9-12.
That early morning tradition went away when the festival moved to the sleepy prison town of Florence in 2003, but you still see fans dart for the stage front at AZ Talio Ranch, formerly Canyon Moon Ranch.
Arizona is the first of Country Thunder's five festivals, April 9-12. The festival in St. Petersburg, Florida, comes in May followed by Country Thunder Alberta in Calgary in June before the back-to-back events in Saskatchewan, Canada, and Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, in July.

When and what it costs
Nashville-based singer and bass player Logan Layman has the distinction of being the first act of the 2026 festival at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 9. Concerts on Friday and Saturday, April 10-11, start at 1 p.m., while the main stage on Sunday, April 12, gets cranking at 1:30 p.m.
Reserved seats are sold out; four-day general admission starts at $415, single-day starts at $150 through countrythunderarizona.frontgatetickets.com.
Country Thunder had one of the biggest days in its history when Morgan Wallen headlined on April 9, 2022. There were nearly 35,000 filling the festival grounds that day, a number that hasn't been broken.
That's also where you can pay for parking: $30 a day or $70 for a weekend parking pass.
First things first: getting there
The 400-acre alfalfa-studded AZ Talio Ranch, 20585 E. Water Way in Florence, is about 70 miles north of Tucson. You drive through miles and miles of farm land and factories until you reach the quiet Pinal County farm town of Coolidge, where the speed limit slows to 35 mph on the main drag leading to the Florence turn-off.
There's a Safeway and Walmart along the way, which might be your last chance to grab gas, snacks, ice and adult beverages. Options in Florence are pretty much limited to Circle K.
After hours at Country Thunder are held in the Electric Thunder tent, where revelers kick up their heels to EDM-style country music.
Dos, don'ts and other fine print
- Like most public events these days, you can't bring in a purse, backpack, cooler or camera bag. You can use a clear plastic bag (we suggest one that proudly states you're a Wildcats fan!) or a standard gallon-sized freezer bag.
- No outside food or drink is allowed. That sounds like a perfect excuse to visit the food court and grab one of those smoked turkey legs roasting on the grill or a frybread taco. The food court has a number of options, including burgers, hot dogs, pizza, tacos and Asian fare.
- Don't even think about rushing up onto the main stage during a performance or tossing anything onto the stage. Security will swarm on you like a busted bees' hive and escort you from the premises. And, no, you will not get a refund.
- But you can line up along the catwalk and try your chance at an autograph. That's the cool thing about country artists; they love their fans, and they happily sign autographs so long as it doesn't interrupt their performance.
- Intoxicated or impaired fans who get unruly "will be handled in a prompt and efficient manner." We're not sure exactly what that entails, but it doesn't sound good.
The lineup
Lainey Wilson returns to headline Country Thunder this weekend. She was the top headliner two years ago.
This year's festival sees the quick return of superstar Lainey Wilson, who headlined the festival in 2024, and the long-awaited return of 2026 CMA Duo of the Year Brooks & Dunn, whose last Country Thunder appearance was two decades ago.
Country newcomer Ian Munsick recorded a duet with headliner Lainey Wilson.
We also could see Wilson team up with her opening act, Ian Munsick, during his set for "Feather in My Hat," the pair's duet from Munsick's 2025 album "Eagle Feather."
Lanie Gardner performs Saturday.
