Two transformers exploded outside a south-side industrial building Saturday afternoon, sparking a fire that sent up a plume of black smoke that could be seen from the Catalina Foothills.
No one was injured in the fire, outside of a General Electric service center at 1401 E. Valencia Road, across the street from an Arizona Air National Guard facility, said Capt. Trish Tracy, a Tucson Fire Department spokeswoman.
East Valencia Road is closed in both directions between South Park and Campbell avenues until about 5 p.m.
Air National Guard firefighters responded to the fire and contained the blaze until the Tucson Fire Department arrived, Tracy said. A sprinkler inside the building also helped contain the fire, preventing it from spreading throughout the facility.
Seven employees evacuated the building.
