With temperatures expected to fall to near freezing tonight, Operation Deep Freeze has been called into effect for Friday and Saturday, according to a press release from the Salvation Army.
People needing shelter should go to the Salvation Army Hospitality House at 1021 N. 11th Ave., near North Granada Avenue and East Speedway Boulevard, after 3 p.m., the release says.
Deep freeze goes into effect when temperatures dip below 35 degrees or when it gets below 40 with rain, the release says.
Isolated showers may fall in the Tucson through the afternoon as an upper-level disturbance moves through Arizona, a National Weather Service meteorologist said Friday morning.
The tail end of a cold front is passing through Tucson and areas further north, such as Gila County, may see some thunderstorms, said meteorologist Chris Rasmussen. The clouds are expected to clear up by this evening, he said.

And that means Southern Arizonans should brace for some teeth chattering, near freezing temperatures tonight, he said. Without the cloud cover, the air will dry out and get even colder, he said.
According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 20 percent chance of showers this afternoon, but it’s supposed to be sunny and mostly clear into next week.
Highs are expected in the upper 50s to low 60s, with overnight lows in the 30s.
