TUCSÓN.- Hace 40 años, David G. Herrera y sus amigos comenzaron una tradición el Viernes Santo que sigue viva y creciendo.
Como fundador de Los Dorados, él, junto con cientos de otras personas participará en la procesión del Vía Crucis hacia la cima de "A" Mountain.
Grupos de ocho personas cargarán, turnándose, la cruz de madera que mide 16 pies de largo y tiene un peso de 250 libras, y que está pintada de blanco y decorada con flores.
El recorrido a la montaña es de 1.4 millas y se llevará, aproximadamente, unas dos horas mientras los participantes van rezando y cantando al pie de las 14 cruces color plata marcadas en el asfalto y que representan las estaciones del Vía Crucis.
El obispo Gerald F. Kicanas de la Diócesis Católica Romana de Tucsón bendecirá la cruz y dirigirá los rezos en camino a la montaña donde se colocará la cruz blanca que permanecerá ahí hasta la Misa de Pascua al amanecer.

Músicos de Divine Mercy acompañarán con canciones como "The Old Rugged Cross", "Under the Weight of the Wood", y "Entre Tus Manos".
"El Viernes Santo es un día muy especial en la vida de los cristianos", dijo Kicanas. "Es un día para mostrar el amor de Cristo para nosotros. Él estuvo dispuesto a dar su vida por nosotros", explicó Kicanas.
Los prisioneros en la cárcel del Condado Pima le han comunicado al obispo que ellos pueden ver la cruz en la cima de la montaña el Viernes Santo, y que ellos también se les unen en oración.
"Para estos hombres y mujeres que se encuentran en situaciones difíciles, existe una luz de esperanza", enfatizó Kicanas.
Herrera extendió la invitación a todas las familias de cualquier denominación religiosa a participar en el servicio ecuménico bilingüe.
"Quisiera darles a todos la oportunidad de participar en la pasión de Jesucristo", dijo Herrera, quien cumplirá 88 años de edad el 25 de abril.
Una vieja lesión en la pierna no le permite a Herrera caminar hasta la cima de la montaña – algo que no ha podido hacer en varios años durante el Vía Crucis. Hoy en día alguien lo sube en carro a la montaña y ahí espera a los participantes.
Fue en 1969 cuando Herrera comenzó el recorrido del Viernes Santo al invitar a jóvenes descarrilados del Barrio Kroeger Lane y otros vecindarios cerca del centro de la ciudad y de "A" Mountain (conocida también como la Montaña de la "A") a participar en este evento.
"Los chicos se estaban metiendo en problemas con la ley y no estaban asistiendo a la iglesia, así que les dije lo que yo quería hacer el Viernes Santo; dijeron que les gustaría participar. Vinieron y trajeron a sus madres", rememoró Herrera al explicar el inicio de Los Dorados.
Herrera, investigador jubilado con la Comisión para la Igualdad de Oportunidades en el Empleo (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) a nivel federal, dijo que el Vía Crucis hacia la montaña inició con 30 jóvenes y que este evento ha atraído entre 500 y 800 personas en ciertos años.
"Hay personas que vienen de lejos para este evento", señaló George Rodríguez, diácono quien es el enlace entre la diócesis y Los Dorados. "Los visitantes de invierno que vienen del Este del País participan, también vienen personas de Sonora, todo Arizona, California, New México, Colorado y Texas", agregó.
"Es un evento enriquecedor y espiritual que sigue atrayendo a la gente joven quien se turna en anunciar las estaciones del Vía Crucis y las lecturas", dijo Rodríguez. "Estos son momentos para meditar sobre nuestras vidas y estar muy agradecidos con nuestro Señor".

As a founder of Los Dorados, he along with several hundred people will participate in a procession up "A" Mountain on Good Friday praying the Stations of the Cross.
Groups of eight will take turns carrying a 16-foot-long, 250-pound wooden cross that is painted white and decorated with flowers.
The journey up the mountain is 1.4 miles and will take about two hours as participants pray and sing at 14 small silver crosses marked on the asphalt that represent the stations.
Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas, of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson, will bless the cross, and lead in prayer up the mountain where the white cross will be erected and remain for an Easter Mass at sunrise.
Musicians with Divine Mercy will accompany with songs such as "The Old Rugged Cross", "Under the Weight of the Wood", and "Entre Tus Manos".
"Good Friday is a significant day in the lives of Christians," said Kicanas. "It is a day that demonstrates the love of Christ for us. He was willing to give his life on our behalf," said the bishop.
"During the Way of the Cross, we will pause at various moments and pray for those who are sick and those who have died," Kicanas said.
Prisoners at the Pima County jail have told the bishop that they can see the cross once it reaches the top of the mountain on Good Friday, and they, too, join in prayer.
"For these men and women who find themselves in a difficult situation, there is also light and hope," said Kicanas.
Herrera extended an invitation to families of all denominations to participate in the bilingual ecumenical service. "I want to give everyone an opportunity to participate in the passion of Jesus Christ," said Herrera, who turns 88 years old on April 25.
An old leg injury prevents Herrera from walking up the mountain — something he has not been able to do for several years during the Way of the Cross. He now is driven up the mountain and waits for the participants to join him.
It was in 1969 that Herrera began the Good Friday journey when he invited wayward youth from Barrio Kroeger Lane and other neighborhoods near Downtown and "A" Mountain to participate in the event.
"The kids were getting in trouble with the law and were not going to church, so I told them about what I wanted to do on Good Friday. They said they wanted to participate. They came and they brought their mothers," recalled Herrera in explaining the start of Los Dorados.
Herrera, a retired investigator with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, said the Way of the Cross up the mountain began with about 30 youth, and the event has attracted between 500 to 800 people in some years.
"People come from out of town for this event," said George Rodriguez, a deacon who is a liaison between the diocese and Los Dorados.
"Winter visitors from back East particiapte, and people come from Sonora, throughout Arizona, California, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas," he said.
"It is an enriching, spiritual event that still attracts young people who take turns announcing the stations and reading prayers," Rodriguez said. "This is a time to meditate about our lives and be in deep gratitude to our Lord."
