Authorities recovered a man's body from the monsoon-swollen Santa Cruz River near Rio Rico on Friday and are searching for a second body also seen in the river.
The search began after a report of two people who were possibly swept away in the Nogales Wash on Thursday, said Sgt. Abraham Pacheco of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office. The wash feeds the river, which flows north.
Sheriff's deputies spotted the bodies floating in the river near Exit 17 of Interstate 19 on Thursday, the sheriff's office said.
Due to dangerous water conditions, the deputies were unable to retrieve them at the time, and search efforts continued, the sheriff's office said Friday.
Later Friday, authorities did pull a man's body from the river, near Exit 22, Pacheco said. His age and identity aren't known, and no clothes or personal items were found with him.
