The federally-run Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan, PCIP, is once again extending coverage for enrollees.
The transitional coverage through April 30 will allow current enrollees more time to review options on the health insurance marketplace, which offers federally subsidized health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, federal officials say.
This additional month will allow PCIP enrollees who select marketplace plans during the ACA's open enrollment to avoid a lapse in coverage.
The federal pre-existing condition plan was created to help uninsured people with a pre-existing condition get care at affordable prices and to serve as a bridge to 2014, when insurers are no longer allowed to deny health insurance coverage to people with pre-existing medical conditions.
The federal government runs the plan for 23 states, including Arizona.
