A man who died in a vehicle crash early Friday morning while fleeing from a Pima County Sheriff’s deputy has been identified as John Ryback.
Ryback, 28, was in a vehicle with Jerry Nuckols, 20, when it crashed near North Fairview Avenue and West Prince Road, said Deputy Jason Ogan, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.
A Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot at during the chase, but he wasn’t injured, Ogan said.
Nuckols was arrested on suspicion of felony murder under the state's felony murder rule. It allows suspects to be charged with murder if someone dies during the commission of certain felonies.
More charges are pending, Ogan said.
Ogan gave this account:
Deputy Randall Nice was trying to stop a white four-door sedan for a speeding violation at about 2:15 a.m. near North Campbell Avenue and East Roger Road when someone inside the vehicle started shooting at the deputy.

The patrol car was hit three times but Nice was not hit.
Nice chased the vehicle west on Prince Road, and when the vehicle turned left to go south on Fairview, the driver lost control and crashed into a utility pole.
Nuckols reportedly ran from the scene, but was later caught by a sheriff’s dog unit with help from a Tucson Police Department helicopter.
Investigators are still trying to determine who was driving the vehicle.
