How many kids does it take to save a life?
That was the question third-grader Drew Messing asked in his science fair project at Castlehill Country Day School, 3225 N. Craycroft Road.
Drew enlisted the help of fellow students to determine whether children could effectively perform the compression-only resuscitation method now recommended.
Drew asked for help from Clint McCall and Melissa Ludgate from the UA Sarver Heart Center to teach the proper technique. After instruction, most of the third- through fifth-graders were able to reach the goal of 100 compressions per minute.
The next phase of Drew's research will focus on the sustained rate required before help arrives to determine how many students taking turns with chest compressions it would require to save a life.
