St. Philip's Friends of Music once again presents its popular summer concert series, beginning Sunday.
The series kicks off with Summer Serenade, an afternoon of art songs and arias performed by tenor Doug Spurlin with Jeffrey Campbell on piano.
Spurlin, a tenor, has been featured as a soloist locally with the Tucson Chamber Artists and the Tucson Masterworks Chorale and at St. Philip's in the Hills.
He also has performed operatic roles with numerous companies, including the Arizona Opera.
Campbell is associate music director and organist at St. Philip's.
Highlights of the program include Italian composer Francesco Santoliquido's evocative "Songs of the Evening," which paints such pictures as an intimate walk through the woods on a starry evening interrupted by the mournful call of an owl, followed by moonrise reflected in the surface of a pond, and angst awakened by church bells.

The performance also will include Beethoven's setting of the early Romantic poem "Adelaide," and selections from Aaron Copland's Old American Songs, including settings of "Zion's Walls," a revivalist song; "At the River," a hymn tune; and "Ching-a-Ring Chaw," a minstrel song.
Admission is by donation to St. Philip's Friends of Music, whose mission is to enrich the musical experience of the parish and community through events such as concerts, education, scholarships and support of special musical events.
