Music is in the air this month as the Tucson Girls Chorus enters its open-enrollment session.
Girls from grades two through 12 can audition for four of the five choirs that make up the chorus, which is in its 25th year here.
All singers must spend some time in one of four choirs before they can be moved into the Advanced Choir. The two top choirs, the Jubilate and the Advanced Choir, both made up of 8th- to 12th-graders, met for their weekly rehearsals last Thursday at Mehl Park, 4020 E. River Road, under the direction of Marcela Molina.
"We want to provide a good educational program," said Molina. "We hope they come out music-literate. We want to build confidence and character and encourage leadership and responsibility."
In addition to the top two choirs, there are three choirs for younger girls - the Ladybugs for second- and third-graders, the Hummingbirds for fourth- and fifth-graders and the Mariposa for sixth- through eighth-graders.

Each choir performs several times a year throughout Tucson, with two major concerts each year, one at the end of each semester, in which all five choirs sing together.
Elizabeth Young, 13, is in her eighth year with the chorus. She currently sings with the Jubilate.
"The musical instruction is great. I learn so much every time," she said. "It's amazing how many people you meet who have the same interests."
The community benefits from the chorus, as well, Molina said. "It's the only girls chorus in Tucson. That makes it very valuable."
