Proposition 415 cruised to a significant victory.
Supporters of the Pima County bond measure that will use $22 million to build a new county animal shelter outnumbered opponents by roughly 59% to 41%.
Vince Rabago, the co-chair of the Pets Are Worth Saving-Proposition 415 campaign, has declared victory. "The community has chosen to extend their hearts to lost and homeless pets," he said.
Currently, the shelter is housed in a 46-year-old building that was constructed for a much smaller population on a temporary basis.
The growing number of people and pets in Pima County, and the shelter's move toward killing less animals, has led to issues with overcrowding and rampant spread of disease.
Opponents of the measure have stated the $22 million proposal will only continue to raise their taxes and blame the county for treating less adoptable animals instead of euthanizing them to maintain population control.

Ann Holden, one of the detractors, said she did not support the measure because Pima County has a history of mismanaging money and she considers the cost excessive for an animal shelter.
