From our country’s beginning, the Founders recognized that American democracy would rely on a flourishing independent press. The Constitution protects a free press through the First Amendment, of course, but also through a less celebrated provision: its recognition of the need for copyrights.
Starting in the 1990s, the idea of putting term limits on members of Congress became a recurring idea to improve democracy. The theory was that replacing legislators with a new batch would produce a better Congress.
