GLENDALE — A Glendale police officer was shot during a struggle with a gunman early Saturday but is expected to recover, officials said.
The officer was shot in the neck and was in serious but stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix Saturday, Officer Matt Barnett said.
He was identified as Jeremy J. Esh, 33, a two-year department veteran.
"It went through and didn't hit anything vital, which is good," said Barnett, a Glendale police spokesman. "He was awake and talking. He's going to have exploratory surgery so we hope that goes well."
The incident began about 1:30 a.m. when officers tried to pull over a speeding car, Barnett said. The driver refused to stop and led officers on a chase that wound through the city and finally ended in a west Phoenix neighborhood.

Several people jumped from the car and Esh tried to stop one of them, Barnett said. During the struggle, the individual pulled a gun and shot Esh.
Barnett said officers only wanted to stop the car for the speeding violation.
