As a Christian for more than 40 years, I appreciate the intention and spirit of an evangelistic crusade, and on March 6, the son of Billy Graham, America's premier post-war evangelist, brings his "La Frontera Crusade" to Tucson.
But unlike his father, who preached Christ's Gospel with remarkably little involvement in politics, Franklin Graham is a fervent supporter of the most racist president the US has ever had. Donald Trump's filthy bigotry has been focused on the very border Franklin Graham shamelessly uses for his Crusade. His support of Trump is indefensible for a Christian.
I worked with undocumented immigrants in the 1990s, and was honored to share the Gospel as part of it. But Franklin Graham's embrace of the most anti-immigrant president in our history disqualifies him from preaching to those on the border as a minister of Jesus. I pray Graham repents, and I pray Tucson's Christian community makes known its concern.
