The article by Jessica Bock regarding parents' "shopping" for schools described one of the problems indicative of Missouri-funded public education ("School test scores are only part of the picture for many," Sept. 15).
The parents in this article had a choice where to move, where to shop for schools. How many of our St. Louis families would love to send their child to Craig Elementary or Avery Elementary but lack the means to afford to buy or rent homes in those attendance areas? As a public school teacher in a North County district, I witness firsthand parents living in motels to remain in our attendance area, knowing they are one paycheck away from living with relatives in an unaccredited district.
School success is more than funding. It's a community of caring teachers, parents and leaders, and good schools are found across our area. It's a shame, though, that a quality education is guaranteed to those who can afford to live in Chesterfield and Webster Groves.
