Former Sahuaro baseball player and Arizona Wildcats signee Javier Medina didn't have to wait long Tuesday morning to hear his name called in the MLB draft.
The right-handed pitcher was taken by the Colorado Rockies with the No. 77 pick overall and the just the second pick of the day. He was the first Southern Arizona high school player picked and second statewide behind Buckeye Verrado's Blake Perkins.
Roughly four hours later, Salpointe Catholic's Donny Sands had his name called by the New York Yankees in the eighth round. Sands, who played his first two seasons at Empire, was a shortstop and pitcher for the Lancers but was drafted at a third baseman by the Yankees.

Baseball America has the signing bonus for the No. 77 selection valued at $789,700 so it's likely that the 17-year-old Medina will be headed for the pros instead of the UA.

Medina, a Mexican national, pitched 37 innings for Sahuaro this year before the Arizona Interscholastic Association and TUSD declared him and catcher Cesar Salazar ineligible. Still, Medina went 4-0 with a 0.76 ERA and struck out a team-high 62 batters.
Sands batted .450 this spring with 36 RBIs and 15 extra-base hits. He tallied six saves and had a 2.40 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched.
