When Justin Bayless teamed with former Arizona Wildcats standout Channing Frye on the Phoenix St. Mary's High School teams of the early 2000s, Bayless' determined little brother was always barging his way into pickup games.
Now, that brother, Jerryd Bayless, will play with Frye at the highest level of basketball — with the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA — while Justin said he is leaving his Wall Street job to become a business manager for his brother.
The trade that brought Bayless to Portland on Thursday, after the Indiana Pacers drafted Bayless in the No. 11 spot, proved a relief for Bayless' family. Bayless was projected to be taken in the 4-7 range for most of the spring.
"I think most of us were shocked," Justin Bayless said. "When Indiana first picked him, I don't think anybody was too happy about it. But once we found out about the trade, everybody was cheering. We were all really excited at that point. They've got a great team and it's exciting to see what they will do."

Jerryd Bayless was unavailable for comment Friday and the Trail Blazers still have not officially announced the deal. But Frye, reached via e-mail by the (Portland) Oregonian, said he also was excited about the move.
"He is extremely competitive and he is an extremely good talent," Frye wrote about Bayless. "I'm happy we have him here and he's gonna make us better, not only on the court, but off."
After an expected introduction in Portland on Monday, Bayless will host a party at Scottsdale's Club Radius on Wednesday to celebrate his entry into the NBA. The event has a $10 cover charge with a portion of the proceeds to benefit Feed the Children, a charity Jerryd Bayless has begun working with.
Justin Bayless, who is promoting the event, said he plans to move to Arizona on Monday, settling in to work with his brother on strategic relationships and wealth management.
"I got my experience, and walked away at the best time," Justin Bayless said. "It looks like the market is horrible. Now, everyone's in transition, so I figured it would be a good time to transition myself."
