New public-health dean named at UA
Iman Hakim was appointed dean of the University of Arizona's Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. A professor of public health and a research scientist, Hakim has been interim dean for a year.
Hakim previously worked as director of the College of Public Health's Division of Health Promotion Sciences and as director of the family and child health concentration. She also is a member of the Arizona Cancer Center and the UA Sarver Heart Center.
Before joining the UA, she was an associate professor at the National Research Center in Cairo, Egypt.
Her research interests include cancer and nutrition; women, maternal and child health; alternative medicine; genetic and molecular epidemiology; tobacco use and cardiovascular disease.

Palacios to head youth job program
Arnold Palacios is the new executive director of Tucson Youth Development, an education and employment program for at-risk youths.
Palacios previously worked for eight years at Pima County One Stop job bank, was principal of Luz Academy for two years and worked for 18 years with the Tucson Unified School District as a teacher and work-experience specialist.
Born and raised in Tucson, Palacios is a graduate of Pueblo High School and the University of Arizona, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English literature with minors in Mexican-American studies and drama, and a master's degree in education.
He is a board member of the National Youth Employment Coalition and a board member of Pima Vocational High School.
Three new hires at Public Media
Arizona Public Media hired three new staff members:
• Kevin Crete joined the company as broadcast studio supervisor and director. He was previously the studio supervisor for KVOA. Crete earned a media arts degree from the University of Arizona.
• Sara Atalla was hired as an underwriting coordinator. She previously worked as a sales associate with the YMCA of Washington, D.C., and as a college basketball coach. She earned a master's degree in sports management from Virginia Commonwealth University.
• Dawn Elliott was hired to coordinate traffic for the radio group. Previously, Elliott was traffic manager at the Journal Broadcast Group. She earned a broadcast communications degree from ITT Tech.
C-Path fills 2 posts
The Critical Path Institute, known as C-Path, filled two positions.
Klaus Romero was named clinical pharmacologist.
A native of Colombia, Romero earned a medical degree from the School of Medicine at Javeriana University in Bogota and completed his residency in medical epidemiology at the Colombian School of Medicine at El Bosque University in Bogota. He also earned a master's degree in pharmacology from Colombian National University in Bogota.
Elizabeth Gribble Walker was named assistant director of the Predictive Safety Testing Consortium.
She previously worked as a scientist in pre-clinical drug development at ZymoGenetics. She earned a Ph.D. in toxicology from the University of Washington.
Yrun gets new role at children's group
Virginia L. Yrun has been named director of organizational leadership for Arizona's Children Association.
Yrun has more than 20 years of leadership experience. She is currently executive director of the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault, which joined the Arizona's Children Association family of agencies in a merger that will become effective July 1.
She previously worked as CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona for 12 years and was a member of the Arizona state Senate.
She earned a law degree and bachelor's in education from the University of Arizona.
BodyBasics has new fitness coach
C. Michael Haas joined BodyBasics as a fitness coach.
He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Arizona and is a graduate of the Pima Community College Fitness Professional Certificate Program.
Haas is certified as a personal trainer by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Haas previously worked in sales and management and owned a small business.
