The dilapidated building that once housed a tire shop on the corner of Broadway and Craycroft Road has been razed, and new walls are going up.
About 40 construction workers are building the new commercial hub, at one of Tucson's busiest intersections. Up to 80 workers will be hired at the project's peak, developers say.
Herschman Architects of Tucson plans a modern, Southwest look for the corner plot, with earthy colors.
The main stores on the property will be Hobby Lobby and Stein Mart. A vitamin store and mattress shop have also signed leases for space on the pad.
"All of the tenants are all best-in-class retailers in their respective sectors and will offer a diverse range of products to the community," said Richard A. Kessler, chief operating officer of Benenson Capital Partners, which is developing the property. "We are proud to be able to continue our commitment to the city of Tucson through the transformation of this currently vacant site into a new, vibrant shopping center."

Hobby Lobby and Stein Mart both hope to move in before the holiday season.
The former Mervyn's store that occupied that corner closed in 2008.
The closed tire shop sat at the corner for more than 20 years before it was razed.
