Four essays out of 125 were picked for the top prizes in the annual Sonoran Soliloquies writing contest sponsored by the University of Arizona.
Freshmen from eight area high schools with a high number of minority students wrote essays detailing what they plan for the future, and how college fits into those plans.
The schools that participated were Cholla High Magnet School, Tucson High Magnet School, Desert View High, Flowing Wells High, Rio Rico High, Marana High, Sunnyside High and Douglas High, according to a press release.
The students were honored for their work in April, when they read their essays at the UA BookStore.
First place: "My Positive" by Max Campbell, Rio Rico High
Second place: "A Lesson in Race" by Alicia Tafoya, Desert View

Third place: "Orange Frosting" by Joanna Tenney, Flowing Wells
Fourth place: "Crayola Colors" by Maria Zuniga, Cholla
Students who submitted essays were given advice by UA tutors and writing instructors. Teachers also attended seminars on how to teach writing in their classrooms, according to the press release.
