A soldier killed in a head-on collision on Interstate 10 near Casa Grande Friday has been identified as 25-year-old Spc. Thomas D. Whitehead.
Whitehead, of Shonto, Ariz., was an Army National Guard combat engineer assigned to the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Huachuca.
He and another soldier — 31-year-old Pfc. Jacobo M. Casillas of Phoenix — were westbound in a 1997 Chevrolet pickup when it crossed the median and hit a Ford sport utility vehicle head-on just before 7 p.m., officials said.
Whitehead was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 7:03 p.m. The other driver, 29-year-old William R. Bagwell of Surprise, was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Casillas, a helicopter mechanic assigned to the same unit, was taken to Maricopa Medical Center and is in stable condition, according to a Fort Huachuca news release.

“We are deeply saddened at the tragedy which has occurred within the ranks of the Warrior Transition Unit,” said Lt. Col. Timothy G. O’Haver, deputy commander for administration of the Raymond W. Bliss Army Health Center. “Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Spc. Whitehead.”
Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The cause remained under investigation Monday.
