Tucson's Park Place mall was evacuated this evening after a grease fire broke out in the food court's McDonald's, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage.
The mall in the 5800 block of East Broadway reopened at 8 p.m., after more than 1,000 people were evacuated for safety reasons due to the smoke.
The Tucson Fire Department had one report of a child suffering from smoke inhalation, but the parents declined treatment for the child on the scene and might have gone to a hospital, authorities said.
Tucson Fire was called about the fire at 6:39 p.m. Wednesday and it was under control at 6:58. The fire at the McDonald's went above the hood system and into a vent, where it extinguished itself, said fire Capt. Barrett Baker.
From the mall's roof, firefighters used a thermo-imaging camera to look into the vent and ensure the fire was out.
