Ned Norris Jr. lost his bid for another term leading the Tohono O'odham Nation in an election held Saturday.
Edward D. Manuel, who served as tribal chairman from 1995 to 2003, was elected chairman of the tribe. Verlon M. Jose, Manuel's running mate, was elected vice chairman, replacing Wavalene Romero, who currently serves as the tribe's vice chairwoman.
The new administration will be sworn into office June 12.
Norris had served in the top position for eight years.
"We are proud of what all of us have accomplished together to improve the lives of the O'odham and build a foundation for great opportunity and prosperity to come," Norris said in a statement released by the tribe.
No official election totals were released by the tribe.
