1872: A corporation is formed in San Francisco to develop diamond fields in northern Arizona. The undertaking was eventually proven to be a swindle which became known as the "Great Diamond Hoax."
1921: Gov. Thomas E. Campbell cancels the state fair to save taxpayers $90,000.
1925: Directors select name El Conquistador for fancy new Tucson hotel, which is now the site of El Con Mall.
1978: Convicted murderers Gary Tison and Randy Greenawalt, aided by Tison's three sons, Raymond, Ricky and Donald, escape from the state prison in Florence. The gang roams the region, killing six people. Donald is killed at a police roadblock near Casa Grande on Aug. 11. Raymond, Ricky and Greenawalt are captured. Gary gets away but dies of exposure in the desert.
