A pole dance class can teach women to be sexy, but it can also focus on a great workout, said Jessica McCain, owner of Tucson Pole Fitness, explaining that many women don't like the association of the "exotic dancer" with the pole.
McCain, who has been teaching pole fitness for three years, recently opened the second location of Tucson Pole Fitness at 2211 N. Indian Ruins Road.
The studio offers a variety of classes, including some where participants do not wear high heels and McCain takes out the "fluff," she said.
Pole fitness can be difficult for women at first because it uses a lot of upper-body strength, she said. But it offers an alternative to regular weightlifting.
Last Thursday, Alison Radei made it through her third pole boot camp class.
The boot camp class teaches basic routines with the pole, but also encompasses squats, pull-ups, lunges and an abs workout.

"Even though I'm a beginner, I know eventually I'll get stronger," she said.
Radei says she attended with a friend and really enjoyed the class.
"When I can spin around a pole and actually land, it's like 'Yea, me!' "
