The concept of a Southern Arizona state - Baja Arizona - has been around for ages as a way to differentiate the region from its more conservative brethren to the north. The notion of secession has been bandied about, but there was never a serious effort in that direction - until earlier this year.
NPR followed up Monday on the Star's February story: Could Baja Arizona be 51st state in US? in which the majority of the 6,500+ people who took the poll voted for the new state. That story had a whopping 664 comments, which you still can read.

SB 1070 enjoys widespread support in Arizona. But that support is by no means unanimous. In southern Arizona some people are so unhappy with the direction the state has taken that they want to create their own state.
Political tensions have been high in Arizona for a while now, but now some liberals are actually talking about seceding from the state. Lawyers and activists from Pima County, Reuters reports, are pushing to create America's 51st state, titled Baja Arizona and encompassing the Democrat-heavy Tucson and the southern county of Pima as a whole.
New York Magazine: Arizona Liberals Are Trying to Form Their Own Tiny, Liberal State
As infuriating as Arizona has been over the past couple of years for liberals around the country - the immigration law, the birther bill, the guns in classrooms bill, etc. - think about how hard it must be to be a liberal and actually live there.
What's the latest terrible news from Arizona, America's dirt backyard? Not much has changed, really. People want as many guns as possible, to make up for the lack of jobs and sustainable mortgages, while Steven Seagal rides around in tanks attacking chickens. Also, penis certificates. There's very little to complain about. So leave it to the liberals to not appreciate how good they have it and demand their own state.
