Auntie Dora’s Porch, the soul food joint that rapidly developed a loyal following this summer, has closed until it can get official approval to operate.
The restaurant opened earlier this summer at 903 E. Fort Lowell Road, in the old Molly G’s location, with a menu that boasted Deep South favorites like chicken and waffles, collard greens, grits, and mac and cheese.
But the restaurant’s owner, Pat Freeman, never obtained a certificate of occupancy from the city, nor a license to operate a restaurant from Pima County, said Patti Woodcock, a Pima County Health Department spokeswoman.
She said the county will work with Freeman to help her come into compliance with department regulations.
“We don’t want to put anybody out of business,” she said. “But we want to make sure that the public receives food that is safe to eat.”

Attempts to reach Freeman by telephone and at the restaurant were unsuccessful. There was a “closed” sign in the restaurant’s window and the curtains had been drawn since Monday.
