MARICOPA — Maricopa police are accusing a woman of attempting to kill her pregnant friend and take her unborn baby as her own.
The Arizona Republic reports Kassandra Toruga faces attempted murder, arson and burglary charges.
Pinal County Attorney’s Office spokesman Kostas Kalaitzidis says Toruga had a first appearance in court Friday and remains in custody pending further review of the case.
She was arrested March 3.
The case began when Maricopa firefighters responded to a blaze Feb. 16.
Police allege Toruga set fire to the other woman’s bedroom closet.
Officers who arrived on the scene say they found Toruga with two large butcher knives, a pair of scissors, diapers and baby clothes.
