Picor breakfast raises $42K for kids
Who and what: The Picor Charitable Foundation held its 13th annual pancake breakfast on Oct. 7 at Reid Park, raising more than $42,000 for local organizations serving disadvantaged youths.
Details: More than 2,000 people attended the breakfast. The Northwest Fire Department gave fire engine tours to kids of all ages.
Highlight: Los Changuitos Feos and the Tucson Girls Chorus performed.
Important work: The foundation raises funds for organizations serving disadvantaged youths in Tucson. Past recipients include the Assistance League of Tucson, Brewster Center Domestic Violence Services, the Giving Tree Outreach Program and Youth on Their Own.

Project Safe Place gets $56,000 grant
Who and what: Project Safe Place, a program of Jewish Family and Children's Service, was awarded $56,000 from the Governor's Office for Children, Youth and Families.
Details: Project Safe Place is a community-based program for 8- to 18-year-old females who have been sexually, physically and/or emotionally abused.
Important work: The program helps girls and young women who are victims of violence to choose healthier coping behavior through intensive individual, group and family counseling, parent education and community service.
Ways to help: Funding from the community helps the organization assist local abuse victims. Volunteers are needed as mentors, special-event staffers and helpers with administrative tasks.

Arizona's Children gala raises $73,000
Who and what: The Arizona's Children Association raised more than $73,000 at its annual gala on Oct. 13.
Details: More than 375 people attended the dinner-and-dancing event, held at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa. The Parent Connection, a division of Arizona's Children Association, was highlighted for its 15-year anniversary.
Highlight: Paul and Beth Zucarelli were presented with a Circle of Champions Award for their long history of community involvement.
Important work: Arizona's Children Association is the oldest and largest statewide comprehensive child-welfare and behavioral-health nonprofit agency in Arizona.
Ways to help: In-kind and monetary donations, as well as volunteers to help with a variety of projects, always are needed.
