Cancer Society's Spring Soiree raises $360,000 to help patients
The seventh annual American Cancer Society Spring Soiree raised more than $360,000 to battle cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient services. It was presented by First Magnus Financial Corp., the parent firm of Charter Funding, with support from Arizona Oncology Associates.
The April 22 fund-raiser drew about 425 guests to the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort. The guests dined, danced to the music of the Robert Street Band, and took part in silent and live auctions.
Paul Ramirez was the auctioneer. Speakers included Dr. Jesse Martinez of the University of Arizona; Dr. Emmanuel Katsanis, professor of pediatrics and pathology at the UA; and Megan Mohaupt, a cancer survivor and Arizona Camp Sunrise counselor.

The Cancer Society's Gift of Life Award was presented to Mort Kranitz for more than 25 years of volunteer service to the society.
Volunteer co-chairs Cary Ridenour and Letty Huffman led the organization of the event. Guests included Garry Brav, Bonnie Mattes, Mort and Sallie Kranitz, and Fred Howard.
Luncheon yields $22,000 to help female Democratic candidates
Arizona List, a nonprofit organization that supports female Democrats running for the Arizona Legislature, county and municipal offices and school boards, raised more than $22,000 during its March 22 Empowering Women Leaders Luncheon.
Ellen Malcolm, founder and president of Emily's List, was the keynote speaker at the sold-out event, at La Paloma Country Club.
Among those who attended were Barbara Farmilant, Stephanie Parker, Mercy Valencia, Katherine Jacobson, Jacqueline Jackson and Susan Dubow.
Wine tasting, auction bring in $70,000 for St. Gregory School
Guests had a "grape" time on April 20 as they celebrated St. Gregory College Preparatory School's 25th anniversary during The Sip, its wine-tasting and auction fund-raiser.
Held at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, the event drew about 300 people to honor the history of the school and support the continuation of the school's scholarship program. The Sip raised about $70,000.
Guests sang along to the soulful sounds of True Devotion, munched on fine foods, tasted wines from around the world and placed bids on items that included a vacation for four at Long Meadow Ranch in California's Napa Valley.
Mel Greenberg chaired the event. She was helped by Executive Committee members Nancy Galdi, Sonia Vohnout, Dian Scott, Judith Minitello, Carolyn Carter, Jodi Walker and Debbie Evans.
The Sip was presented by Greenberg Financial Group and Sam Hughes' Place. It was sponsored by S.W. Jack Drilling Co.
Guests included Jim and Jan Harrison; Dean Greenberg; Ted and Shannon Chapman; and Eddie Leon and his wife, Joy Taylor-Leon.
Magellan Circle Lecture yields $55,000 to benefit students
The UA College of Social and Behavioral Sciences held its third annual Magellan Circle Lecture and Dinner at the Manning House on March 21. The event supports student scholarships, student scholarly travel and research.
More than $55,000 was raised in renewals and new Magellan Circle memberships. The fund-raiser drew more than 230 guests, including Esther Capin, Colleen Concannon, Bob Majors, Andrew Greeley and Axel Holm. UA Foundation President Jim Moore and former CNN anchorman Lou Waters also were present.
The event included a host of speakers, including Christina Butler, a Magellan Circle scholar; keynote speaker Mark Chaves; UA Provost George Davis; UA President Peter Likins; and college Advisory Board Chairman Alberto Moore. Ed Donnerstein was master of ceremonies.
