Nine leaders
° The recent election of Herminia Frias as chairwoman of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona brings to nine the number of American Indian tribes in Arizona with female leaders. There are 22 federally recognized American Indian tribes with reservation land in Arizona.
The female tribal leaders:
● Sherry Cordova , Cocopah Tribe, based out of Somerton, tribal membership: 1,025.
● Nora McDowell , Fort Mojave Indian Tribe, based in Needles, Calif., tribal membership: 824.
● Herminia Frias, Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona based in Tucson, tribal membership: 14,000.
● Joni Ramos, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Scottsdale, tribal membership: 6,284.
● Kathleen Wesley-Kitcheyan, San Carlos Apache Tribe in San Carlos, tribal membership: 11,000.
