Editor’s note: This year, UA and ASU football will face off for the 100th time in what has come to be known as the Territorial Cup game. Leading up to that Nov. 28 matchup, which will be played right here in Tucson, we will be republishing the Arizona Daily Star’s coverage of each rivalry game — one a day — going back to their first meeting in 1899. Tune in daily for a blast from the past.
Some important things to keep in mind: This isn’t the 100th anniversary; the upcoming meeting will be the 100th time the teams have gone head-to-head. There were a number of years that they didn’t compete against one another. The Wildcats lead the all-time series vs. the Sun Devils, 52-46-1.

What was reported at the time:
Once more the Varsity deals another scalp on the gridiron; this time from the Tempe Normal school. The Normals (who) had been boasting openly of the championship of the Territory yesterday acknowledged themselves outdone by the superior playing of the University team. The weather was excellent, the field fine, the crowd fair sized, and enthusiastic and all agreed that never before in Arizona had such a splendid exhibition of America’s own sport been witnessed.
The playing by the Normal team was of any order any eleven could be proud to show. It often resembled in formation. Ochoa made disastrous line bucks, the work done by the Phoenix Indians when Mariana used to buck the line. All credit is due this team for their genuine good playing, but the U.A. won.
