Editor’s note: This year, UA and ASU football will face off for the 100th time in what has come to be known as the Territorial Cup game. Leading up to that Nov. 28 matchup, which will be played right here in Tucson, we will be republishing the Arizona Daily Star’s coverage of each rivalry game — one a day — going back to their first meeting in 1899. Tune in daily for a blast from the past.
Some important things to keep in mind: This isn’t the 100th anniversary; the upcoming meeting will be the 100th time the teams have gone head-to-head. There were a number of years that they didn’t compete against one another. The Wildcats lead the all-time series vs. the Sun Devils, 52-46-1.

What was reported at the time:
The Tempe Normal football team was outplayed, outgeneraled and defeated by the university eleven yesterday afternoon on the university field. The score was 34 to 0.
The varsity had the Tempe boys bested at every point of the game. The chief weakness of the teachers was their lack of knowledge and practice of the game's finer points, this putting them in many tight places. Although the visitors fought hard every minute of the game, they were so outclassed that they could make but occasional spurts against the stronger varsity.
The game began with the university kicking to the Normal. The Normal boys carried the ball up to about the middle of the field and there lost it. It was carried back to about the 15-yard line by the varsity, who were forced to turn it over to the teachers. On the first down, a bad pass was made and the ball fumbled. Miller rushed through the Normal line, picked the ball up and carried it across the goal line before he was tackled, making the only score of the first quarter. Crawford failed to kick the goal. The rest of the quarter was featured by a pretty forward pass by the Normal boys, a 15-yard run by Luis and a 20-yard dash around end by Porter of the varsity.
