OMAHA, Neb. — The president of the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association has been accused of injecting racehorses with alcohol 75 times, charging $15 a shot and writing it off as a "pre-race adjustment."
Jay Stewart faces four misdemeanor counts of attempting to influence a race by tampering with horses on four occasions. His trial starts Wednesday.
Stewart is alleged to have administered intravenous vodka shots to horses at Fonner Park in Grand Island, Neb., in 2005.
Scot Waterman, executive director of the Lexington, Ky.-based Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, Inc., believes the prosecution for administering alcohol to a horse is a first in U.S. racing. Waterman said the alcohol is used to calm jittery horses.
In a story first reported Friday by the Omaha World-Herald, Stewart denied any wrongdoing. He didn't return a message seeking comment.

Former Ill.-Chicago player alleges sexual harassment
CHICAGO — A men's basketball player at the Illinois-Chicago has filed a lawsuit that names coach Jimmy Collins, as well as other school officials, alleging an assistant coach sexually harassed the player.
The lawsuit filed in federal court Thursday claims Luis Martinez was sexually harassed by Lynn Mitchem, a UIC assistant coach.
Martinez, a walk-on freshman, claims in the lawsuit that Mitchem put a hand on the player's bare chest in the locker room after a Dec. 19 game and made sexually suggestive comments.
Sheldon Nagelberg, an attorney for Martinez, said the player left the team in the days after the alleged incident. Mark Rosati, UIC associate chancellor for public affairs, said that the university does not comment on litigation. He said Mitchem is on paid leave.
