Former Arizona Wildcats star Kevin Newman signs minor-league contract with Diamondbacks

Newman, 30, has spent parts of the past six seasons in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds. Newman has a career batting average of .259 with 23 home runs, 171 RBIs and 38 stolen bases.

Should he make the big-league club, Newman will get a base salary of $1.75 million with a chance to earn another $1.4 million in bonuses based on plate appearances, the Arizona Republic reported. His contract includes opt-outs at the end of spring training and on June 15.

Newman earned All-America and all-conference accolades across three seasons at the UA from 2013-15. He hit .337 as a Wildcat with 35 doubles and 46 stolen bases. The Pirates selected Newman in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft.

The Diamondbacks also signed catcher Tucker Barnhart to a minor-league deal.
