Mervyns announced today it will close its 149 department stores with going out of business sales over the holidays.
The department store chain, which has three stores in Tucson — at 4510 N. Oracle Road, 5555 E. Broadway, 3660 S 16th Ave. — announced in July it had filed for protection from its creditors in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Mervyns spokesman Andrew Siegel said he did not know the exact number of employees working at Tucson's three Mervyns store. But it is likely the stores have between 200 and 300 employees, because most Mervyns stores have between 80 and 100 workers each.
Siegel said there is no timeline for closings the stores.
"The sale lasts as long as the merchandise does," he said.
A statement from the company said it would use an outside firm to assist in the liquidation sales. The company started in 1949 with a store in San Lorenzo, Calif.
